2009 Fairchild Challenge Award Ceremony

AWARDS AND PRIZES

All high schools that earn more than 900 points will be presented with the 2009 Fairchild Challenge Award at our awards ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2009.

The sixteen top-scoring schools will be awarded $1,000 (one), $500 (five) or $250 (ten) to support their environmental programs.

Schools receive four-person family passes to Fairchild, Fairchild Challenge drawstring backpacks, and a limited number of Challenge T-shirts to distribute to students and teachers who participate actively.

REQUIREMENTS

·    Challenge Options for High Schools Option 1 ECO-SKIT: “WHAT A WASTE!”

·    For individuals or groups

·    Create a piece – spoken, acted or sung; comic or serious – about waste (e.g., toxic, electronic, municipal solid, excess packaging, wasteful waste or any other type of waste) to be performed at Fairchild’s Garden House on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m.

·    You may incorporate rhythmic or musical backup into your performance. Acoustic accompaniment only; no electronic equipment is provided or permitted. No other backup, such as CDs, DVDs, and PowerPoint presentations, is permitted. Relevant costumes are encouraged.

·    Bonus (post-judging): 25 additional points are allocated if a teacher or school administrator joins the performance.

·    Time limit: two minutes; longer performances will result in a penalty.

·    Perform on stage before an audience and panel of judges. Fairchild will provide microphones.

·    An electronic version of the complete performance text must be submitted by the due date, Wednesday, October 1. Schools may make changes to the text for the performance; however, the original submitted copy will be the text given to the judges. No changes may be made to the judges’ copy after the due date.

·    Performances will be judged on creativity, relevance to theme, accuracy of information, presentation/performance and impact.

·    School submits: Option 1 entry form with the author’s and performer’s names; an electronic version of text used in the performance sent to us by e-mail at challenge9-12@fairchildchallenge.org

·    Due at Fairchild: 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 1

·    Maximum possible points: 100

REQUIREMENTS

·    For individuals

·    Design a one-color image with a compelling environmental message that represents the mission* of the Fairchild Challenge 2009, to be printed on a drawstring backpack and a T-shirt.

·    Design size must be no larger than 8" x 10" and presented on 8 ½" x 11" white, unlined paper.

·    Original, hand-rendered or computer-generated work is acceptable. Note: If selected, students may be asked to provide computer-generated designs electronically.

·    Design must include the words “Fairchild Challenge 2009.”

·    On a separate sheet, in one paragraph, explain the relevance of your design to the Fairchild Challenge.

·    The winning design will be printed on a drawstring backpack to be given to active Challenge participants at all participating schools. Additionally, the winning design will be printed on a limited quantity of T-shirts to be distributed to participating schools.

·    Designs will be judged on artistry, creativity, technical ability, appeal and the explanation of the design’s relevance to the theme. (Because iguanas are considered invasive, please do not use!)

·    School submits: Option 2A entry form; up to two Fairchild Challenge designs with a one-paragraph explanation for each design

·    Due at Fairchild: 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 15 (same date and time as Option 1 event)

·    Maximum possible points: 100 (50/design)

REQUIREMENTS

·    For individuals

·    Design an image that represents Baynanza Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day, to be printed on the front of a T-shirt. Baynanza is sponsored annually by DERM, the Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management (www.miamidade.gov/derm), a Fairchild Challenge partner.

·    Design size should be 8" x 10" and the design must be presented on 8½" x 11" white paper.

·    On a separate sheet, write a one-paragraph explanation of your design.

·    Design must make reference to the year (2009 or ’09) and must use the word(s) “Baynanza,” “Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day” or both.

·    Original, hand-rendered or computer-generated work is acceptable. No photographs. Note: If selected, students may be asked to provide computer-generated designs electronically.

·    Design can be full-color; gradation of colors is allowed. The design may be of any natural feature, recreational or other use of Biscayne Bay. At least a part of Biscayne Bay should be in the design.

·    Design should convey a positive message about Biscayne Bay and/or the Baynanza event. If people are incorporated into the design (not necessary), please make sure they represent the diversity of our community.

·    Designs will be judged on artistry, creativity, technical ability, appeal to peers and the explanation of the design’s relevance to the theme.

·    School submits: Option 2B entry form; up to two Baynanza T-shirt designs with a one-paragraph explanation for each design

·    Due at Fairchild: 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 15 (same date and time as Option 1 event)

·    Maximum possible points: 100 (50/design)

·         For individuals

·         A. Contact elected officials

o   Write a 300- to 400-word letter to the appropriate elected official about a local, state or national environmental issue of importance to you. In an attachment, you must include a more complete explanation and presentation of the situation. Given the pressures upon public officials’ schedules, the documents taken together should not exceed 1,500 words.

·         B. Film review

o   Would you recommend the film, “Kilowatt Ours” to your peers? Why or why not? Be sure to include a brief synopsis of the film. Which form of alternative energy would you suggest that the U.S. pursue and why?

·         C. Carbon footprint

o   Select and utilize any two of the following carbon footprint calculators:

o   www.3degreesinc.com/carbon_calculator

o   Compare the drawbacks and benefits of each. In your opinion, is one more effective (e.g., impact, information provided, bias, visual presentation, etc.)? Why or why not? Suggest additional features that would enhance the effectiveness of these models in inspiring change in consumer behavior.

·         Select one opinion paper topic from the list of three provided above.

·         Complete a 1,500-word paper, typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font, when possible double-sided.

·         Papers must be written in the student’s own words and must provide in-text citations whenever appropriate.

·         Papers must contain facts based on research and include the student’s own supporting opinions.

·         Quote from or make reference to at least five sources that support your statements; at least three of these sources must be from books, journals, magazines and/or other reliable literary sources published online or in print.

·         Papers must include a title page and a bibliography.

·         In-text citations and bibliographic references must follow MLA (Modern Language Association) style.

·         Papers will be judged on evidence of research, sources, knowledge of subject, clarity of writing, expression of and support for point of view, effective introduction and conclusion and originality.

·         School submits: Option 3 entry form; up to three papers, one paper per topic

·         Due at Fairchild: 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 19

·         Maximum possible points: 300 (100/paper)
